Description

The Boston Planning and Development Agency, Geographic Information System (GIS) City-Wide 3D project provides a detailed three-dimensional model including the terrain, groundplan and buildings of the city.

The buildings layer was developed from stereo photogrammetric methods, capturing the roof-details larger than 1 Meter with a precision of about 10 centimeters. The roof-print of the building is projected to a terrain model to create a 3D building volume.

Purpose

This buildings model is useful as a visual reference for the shape and location of buildings.

Sources

The BOS3D_Bldg_BPDA layer is composed of building models from three sources. Information about the source of each model is recorded in the attribute, ObserveSrc Most of the models originated with a 2012 photogrammetric survey by Infotech. This survey established building polygons with heights. Specific areas of the city have been augmented with more detailed interpretation of the same 2012 sources, to estimate more detailed roof geometry. This work was carried out by Cybercity3d. Buildings that have been subject to Article80 large project review were modeled by the BPDA's Urban Design Technology Group. initially built using aerial photography from April 2010 by Infotec USA. Photogrammetric development of the 3D building models was conducted by CyberCity 3D.

Usage Notes

The tile frame included with each tiled data set can be used to register the buildings layer with the tiled terrain model or with neighboring tiles.

Attribute Data Dictionary

The field schema for the Bos3d_Bldg_BPDA_MP layer is based on a template developed by pbcGIS. The fields are designed to record the staus of buildings at different phases of their life-cycle. Curently, not all of the attributes are completely filled out.

Build_ID

Text

Building ID that would link to an Abstract Buildings Table.� Currently set according to the Parcel ID intersected by the centroid of the building part.

Part_ID

Text

This would be an ID that could distinguish parts of a building that have different uses or were built at different times.

Name

Text

Name of the building or Article-80 project.

Appear

Date

This is a date field that designates when the building would be turned on if a time-slider were used.� It is not necessarily the date that the building part was built.� It may be just the first known appearance of the building part.

Disappear

Date

This is a date field that designates when the building would be turned off if a time-slider were used.� It is not necessarily the date that the building part was built. This field usually represents the date when the building was actually demolished.

Status

Text� (Domain)

Establishes the stage of the lifecycle for the building.� Values of Status are taken from the Status_Code domain (described in more detail, below.

A general purpose note that can be used to elaborate on Status -- particularly where the status is set to "Other" or "Suppress"� It may also be used to flag building models that need to be split or need attention for some other reason.
